Parasha I, Robot wrap-up [Nov. 30th, 2009|06:23 pm]

[mood | blank]

So... now that the Thanksgiving holidays should be pretty much over for everyone, anyone have any discussion of I, Robot as a whole that they wanted to do?

Guess I'll put my own ramblings under a cut, just in case. )

Also, a reminder: since no one's spoken out against the schedule as presented, I guess it stands? Although we could futz around with some of the toward-Christmas dates still if anyone protests. But anyhow, here's the schedule again, and a reminder that "A Scandal in Bohemia" will be discussed starting on the second. (Wednesday.)

Frustration.... [Nov. 29th, 2009|07:39 pm]

...is when you run up to the airline gate, there is no one there, and the gate is closed but the plane is still there AND THEY DON'T LET YOU ON! >.<;;

Seriously? It's not like me, and the guy behind me, are unable to run and get to our seats immediately. It's not like they can't afford to be 5 minutes late. -.-;

And then the initial kicker - once I got someone to come out from the locked door, and informed them that I'd purchased an upgrade on the second leg of my flight, I was informed I wasn't getting that refunded.

>.<;;;; I wanted to punch his lights in. I was so frustrated going back through the security gate again - thank God my Dad was still here, waiting to pick up my brother-in-law who was coming in from NJ at a later flight.

My Dad was very understanding. :) And it's a good thing he told me to go up to the ticketing counter and talk to someone behind there - I was able to get my upgrade refunded. :) At least that much, so I'm kinda happy about that.

But I definitely hope that other supervisor gets a flat tire on the way home. -.-;

*sobs* I fail as a fan - it's currently 12:37 AM November 27. I was going to post this at exactly 11:59 PM, but I forgot daylight savings time makes it 14 hours difference not 13 hours. ^.^;;

Gosh, what to say... he is the reason I came into the fandom to begin with. :) Despite [info]amefurift 's mulitple attempts throughout the years (at least 2 ^.^), I just wasn't interested in Arashi. But then, on a whim, I downloaded the Sailor Moon live action drama, with the intent of making fun of it, and I inadvertently got hooked. >.>;; This eventually led to Hana Yori Dango, which led to Jun Matsumoto (yup... Jun baited) which led to Bambino, which led to "We Can Make It." It was with that song where I first fell in love. :D Jun began to sing the first line, in his adorably nasal manner, but the voice that came immediately after it floored me. o.o; It was so mellow and warm and absolutely wonderful to listen to!

Later, I discovered that this same voice would be starring in his first ever TV drama, Maou, and that the new song "truth" would be the theme. I listened to it and pretty much fell irrevocably in love with both him and the group Arashi. :) That was back in June 2008. Since then, I've become an avid fan (some of my students would use the word psychotic XD) and every chance I get, I introduce Arashi to folks.

And all because of Ohno Satoshi. :)

大野くんへ! お誕生日おめでとうございます! 楽しいかった思います! (and I hope I said that right! XD)

The Cat Returns ending song [Nov. 26th, 2009|01:41 pm]

[music |Xiao shou la da shou by Jasmine Leong]

I watched the Cat Returns today and I noticed that the melody (you know the instrumental if that's the right term) was the same as the one of my favourite song 'xiao shou la da shou' or Little Hands hold big hands by Fish Leong. What a coincidence! This wonderful song which I've listened to heaps of times also happens to be the melody of another J-Pop song written for my other addiction being Ghibli songs.

To cut to the chase, does anyone know who the name of the artist as well as the jpop song is? Also, which version came first? Did Fish Leong write a mandarin cover of this song or was it the other way around? Finally, which song do you like better? TheJapanese Cat Returns ending or the Chinese song 'xiao shou la da shou?'

Parasha: Adventures of Sherlock Holmes tentative schedule [Nov. 25th, 2009|03:52 pm]

[mood | bouncy]

Alright, so. The book for December is The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. There are tons of different editions out there, just make sure you get one with the right stories, please! Or read them via the net, since, y'know, they're That Old.

With twelve stories to cover, there are two approaches I considered. The same as I, Robot, ie three days per week, or bunching them up daily at different times of the month, to try to avoid the holidays. I went with the former, but if enough people protest, it could still be changed.

Anywho, the tentative schedule:

Wed. December 2nd: A Scandal in Bohemia
Fri. December 4th: The Red-Headed League
Mon. December 7th: A Case of Identity
Wed. December 9th: The Boscombe Valley Mystery
Fri. December 11th: The Five Orange Pips
Mon. December 14th: The Man with the Twisted Lip
Wed. December 16th: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
Fri. December 18th: The Adventure of the Speckled Band
Mon. December 21st: The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Wed. December 23rd: The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor
Mon. December 28th: The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet
Wed. December 30th: The Adventure of the Copper Beeches

That skips Christmas itself, as you may note, but leaves a book on New Years Eve, plus no extra time to discuss the book as a whole unless some is left at the start of January.

I guess we could also stick mostly to this schedule, but shift things around a bit so that there are a few daily readings in the mix, to leave a few of the other days open...

Anyhow, let me know what y'all think.

"Who the hell are you?" "IT'S BLUM, YOU BASTARDS!" [Nov. 25th, 2009|04:50 am]

[mood | pleased]

So AUSA was this weekend. I'd stated that I was refusing the idea of it being any less than awesome, and that, in fact, I was going to DEMAND awesome.

I need to demand more often, apparently, because my weekend ruled. More like conquered overwhelmingly.

Thursday: Food, Room, Tits, And Greetings )

Friday: The Work Begins, The Hopeless Return, A Surprise Guest, Impressive Ethic, and How To Get To Drink With Guests )

Saturday: Back In Blaine, Subbing For Steve, A Message For Jet, Epic Bar Time, The Amazing Rave, The Finger Of Beckoning, and Girls Who Can Dance )

Sunday: Goodbyes, Connections, Plans, Partying, and More Amazing People. )

Monday: Nudity, Sex, Toys, The Trip Home, and Guyanan Or Guyanese, She's Still Hot )

So all in all, in the words of Chris Troy: "This con was GOD-TIER".

Thanks to all the people who made it so amazing, including my fellow staff (who'll never see this, probably), the kickass VAs I got "stuck" next to for hours (likewise), the random people I met who I hopefully will at least see again in a few months, Dar, Dani, Sarah, Laura, Eric, Liz, Val, Patti, Josh, Gongo, Rob, Alanna, JJ, Alli, Cat, Paul, Jamie, Mike, Adam, Carlo, Ezra, Alex, Jessica, Keith, Chris, Trin, Ana, Greg, Erik, Kat, Chris, Carrie, Ray, Pete, Drew, Liz, Luminal, and anyone else who I might have forgotten due to name overload.

There's a reason I make it a point to go all the way down to VA every fall, even if it means attending a convention on the same weekend my girlfriend is at another one. It's not the setting or the programming or anything like that. It's the people. And all of you kick so much ass, it's amazing. Much love to all of you. (especially the blondes, since I've also nicknamed this "Hot Blonde Con", so you get added love. :P)

I was wondering if anyone here knew the precise date for the US Ponyo DVD release.
Someone on wiki said it was on 10 Feb 2010, while videoETA has it listed for sometime in January 2010.

My google-fu has been rusty tonight. Can anyone answer my question?

Six weeks [Nov. 24th, 2009|07:25 pm]

quangster
My how quickly the year has gone by. It's already Thanksgiving which means it's the start of the next 6 weeks that always challenge me emotionally. All year I've been going through mood swings and I fear they'll just intensify towards the end of the new year. A lot has changed since last year and even 2 years ago when I was with someone. I think I understand now why people seek out relationships and want to be with someone. They were truly happy times even if the relationship was rocky every now and then. But what relationship doesn't have bumps in the road?

I made the decision this year to look for another relationship. Maybe that's why it's been such a frustrating year. I'm still picky as ever and there was really only one person I was shooting for and when that didn't materialize, it was really disappointing. I can't say why I'm so choosy when it comes to dating but I really want to be with people I find interesting and people I want to give myself to. Often times, it seems, I'm just choosing the wrong people! LOL I guess I have a problem. I don't want the girl who is interested in me right off the bat (like the girl at work who should realize soon that I'm not interested in her) but instead want the girl that seems a little out of reach. Why don't I desire the one that is easier and more of a sure thing? I don't know.

Really, the biggest disappointment from my attempt was not that I was soundly rejected. That would've been much easier to take and deal with. No, instead I received the dreaded no answer. My answer was just silence. I -hate- silence. It just made me feel awful. I'd known this person for 4 years and it felt like my feelings didn't even deserve a rejection. It was ninth grade all over again when Olivia did the same thing to me when I finally had told her I had a crush on her since the 3rd grade. Why haven't I learned my lesson yet? Just stop telling people you have feelings for them. In a way, I should've expected it. It wasn't like I had been a close friend. But I had liked her for a long time and it didn't hurt to ask. What's the worse that can happen? My feelings get hurt? Just a little but the world doesn't stop to shed you a tear. Just put your head down and go back to work.

In a nutshell, that's how the next six weeks usually goes. A mix between disappointment, hope, sadness, excitement, gratefulness and depression. No big turkey dinner this year even though I know how to make a turkey now. Instead, I'll just make a couple of drumsticks and have those. There's a big pot luck tomorrow at work and I'm making a braised pork dish that I hope everyone will enjoy. I do miss cooking for people, mostly friends. I don't know what will happen this year. If things will be good, bad or ugly. I know that I can't wait to get schooling over so I can stop worrying so much about money. Just 3 more payments left to go and I won't have to pinch pennies anymore. But money worries me too much. I've been debating taking out some money from my IRA to pay off my debt and loans. If one of my holdings doubled in he next year, I'd probably consider it. I'll take the tax hit for early withdrawl if it means I'll be debt free. Besides, if my gamble was correct, there's no harm in taking out money I didn't have before I started. Maybe that's what is making me unattractive. My worries about money. Girls don't like boys without money. LOL Hopefully it won't be such a long wait between posts.

Oh yeah, I totally nailed the Top 4 for Top Chef this year. Bryan and Michael Vataggio(sp), Kevin Gillespie and Jennifer forgot-her-last-name-but-she's-hella-cute. First time ever picking the top 4 after only 3 episodes. Even one of my darkhorses (Eli) made it to the final 5. Sadly, I don't think Jennifer is going to win. She suffers from what happens to many women after early success...they lose confidence and begin to second guess themselves. I hope she can pull through because everyone, I mean EVERYONE in the final four have been fantastic chefs. I think one of the Vataggio brothers will win it but I'm pulling for Jennifer (the cute one) and Kevin (America's favorite "fat kid"). Can't wait to see how this season ends!

[mood | worried]

Since the poll was pretty much tied, and people didn't have too many arguments for/against, I'm going with the vague flow and declaring the book for December to be The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (in whatever edition, just putting *a* link for the sake of ease), schedule to be forthcoming vaguely shortly.

If anyone has any protests/arguments for Hogfather or against this book, make them now. :p

(I just hope the lack of discussion doesn't mean a lack of enthusiasm for Parasha in general, eep.)
